The Anatomy of melancholy

(c) Maria Frodl

"The contrasts between past and present, added to her ability to explore boundaries, result in a balanced combination of minimal music, introspection, desire and superior musicality." Klassiek Centraal, Music WebMagazine

Emily Stewart ’s first project takes its name from Robert Burton’s work “The Anatomy of Melancholy”, a book first published in 1621 that looks at the human ailment of melancholy from a historical, psychological, and philosophical point of view. At its core lies the idea that the human experience and range of emotion is to be seen through the prism of melancholy. The music, written for violin, cello and double bass, draws inspiration from Stewart’s own multicultural background, her classical music upbringing, and her love of jazz and 1960s folk rock. Much like Burton, whose book is a compendium of knowledge and quotes from different sources, the trio draws its repertoire from a mix of own compositions, improvisation, and arrangements of existing material, from classical composers such as Bartók to folksingers such as Jackson C. Frank. Through musical miniatures interspersed with Burton quotes and short pieces of fiction by Stewart, the three musicians dive into an inner world that finds comfort in nostalgia and melancholy.

Bohatsch & Skrepek & Stewart

(c) Stephan Mussil
